The biblical explanation

What the church officially teaches

The first of the Seventh-day Adventist fundamental beliefs concerns Scripture: the Holy Scriptures "are the infallible revelation of His will. They are the standard of character, the test of experience, the authoritative revealer of doctrines, and the trustworthy record of God's acts in history." The eighteenth, on the gift of prophecy, states that Ellen White's writings "speak with prophetic authority and provide comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction" — and immediately adds that they are "a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction" while making clear that the Bible is the standard by which all teaching must be tested.

In practice this means no Adventist doctrine rests on Ellen White alone. Every belief in this library — the Sabbath, the sanctuary, the state of the dead, the second coming — is argued from Scripture, and could be held by someone who had never heard her name.

What she said about her own writings

Her own statements are stronger than her critics expect: "The Bible, and the Bible alone, is to be our creed, the sole bond of union." "The word of God is to be our counselor... it is the only infallible rule of faith and practice." She described her writings as "a lesser light to lead men and women to the greater light" — the Bible. A teacher who insists that her readers test everything she wrote by a higher authority is not claiming equality with it.

Why the misunderstanding persists

Adventists quote her frequently, and outsiders reasonably ask whether frequent quotation means equal authority. The distinction is between a commentary and the text: a church may value a trusted teacher highly while still holding that the teacher stands under Scripture and can be corrected by it. The Bereans were commended for testing even an apostle's preaching against Scripture daily (Acts 17:11); the same test applies to every later messenger.

What Scripture clearly says

  • All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is the complete equipment of the believer (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
  • Teaching is measured by the law and the testimony (Isaiah 8:20).
  • Even apostolic preaching was tested against Scripture (Acts 17:11).
