The biblical explanation

Dust, breath, and a living soul

Genesis 2:7 describes the person formed from dust and given the breath of life as a living soul. Read alongside Ecclesiastes 9 and the resurrection passages, this points to a whole living person, rather than an inherently immortal soul temporarily inhabiting a body. Ecclesiastes 12:7 describes the reversal at death: dust returns to the earth and the life-giving spirit returns to God.

Immortality and resurrection

First Timothy 6:15–16 attributes inherent immortality to God. First Corinthians 15 locates the believer’s reception of immortality at the resurrection. John 11 uses sleep to describe Lazarus’s death; First Thessalonians 4 places the reunion of believers at Christ’s return.

The thief on the cross: text and punctuation

Luke 23:43 is a significant disputed passage. One reading understands the promise as made that day, with its fulfillment in the future. Many other Christians understand it as promising paradise immediately after death. Punctuation is part of this debate, but a changed comma must not be presented as the exact KJV quotation. Read the displayed verse as translated and compare its context, including John 20:17.

Absent from the body and departing to be with Christ

In 2 Corinthians 5 Paul desires to be clothed with heavenly life, not left unclothed. Reading this alongside 1 Corinthians 15 places it within the hope of resurrection. Philippians 1:23 expresses his desire to be with Christ; in this reading, the next conscious experience after death is resurrection. Other Christians read these passages as conscious presence with Christ between death and resurrection.

The rich man, Lazarus, and communication with the dead

This reading understands Luke 16:19–31 as a parable teaching the urgency of responding to Scripture in this life, not a literal map of the afterlife. Many Christians interpret it differently. Deuteronomy 18 and Isaiah 8 warn against seeking the dead through mediums. The hope for grieving believers rests in Jesus and resurrection, not spiritualistic communication.

Alternative interpretations

  • Conscious intermediate state

Many Christians believe believers are consciously with Christ after death while still awaiting the resurrection of the body.

How Seventh-day Adventists Understand This

This understanding of death is often called conditional immortality and is the position held by Seventh-day Adventists. It reads the disputed passages about paradise and being with Christ alongside the resurrection hope, while acknowledging that many Christians understand a conscious intermediate state.

Looking to Jesus

Salvation is God’s gift by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not earned by works (Ephesians 2:8–10). Open the Bible. Read the context. Compare Scripture with Scripture. Examine the evidence. Test every conclusion. Follow Jesus.
