The biblical explanation

Caught up together

First Thessalonians 4:13–18 includes a shout, the archangel’s voice, God’s trumpet, the resurrection of the dead in Christ, and living believers caught up together with them. Read together, these passages point to one public return, not a separate secret removal years earlier.

Visible and unexpected

Revelation 1:7 describes a coming seen by every eye. The thief imagery of 2 Peter 3:10 concerns unexpected timing, not silence or invisibility. Jesus’s promise in John 14 is a promise to return and receive His people.

One taken, one left

Matthew 24:37–41 compares the coming with Noah’s day. The flood took the unprepared in judgment. This comparison cautions against treating this passage as an unambiguous description of a secret rapture; other interpreters understand the taken-and-left imagery differently.

Daniel’s final week

The historicist reading treats Daniel’s seventy weeks as continuous, reaching Messiah’s ministry and the early gospel mission. It does not detach the final week by millennia to create a future seven-year tribulation. That difference is an interpretive disagreement, not a reason to disparage fellow Christians.

Alternative interpretations

  • Pre-tribulation futurism

Many dispensationalist Christians distinguish a rapture before a future tribulation from Christ’s public return afterward.

  • Post-tribulation readings

Other Christians, place the gathering of believers at Christ’s public return.

How Seventh-day Adventists Understand This

Seventh-day Adventists understand the gathering of believers as part of Christ’s one public return, not a separate secret pre-tribulation rapture. They read Daniel’s seventy weeks as continuous rather than detaching the final week into the distant future.

Looking to Jesus

Salvation is God’s gift by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not earned by works (Ephesians 2:8–10). Open the Bible. Read the context. Compare Scripture with Scripture. Examine the evidence. Test every conclusion. Follow Jesus.
