Examining the question

Why This Is a Serious Question

Whether God exists shapes how we understand meaning, morality, death and hope. Thoughtful people have reached different conclusions, and uncertainty is not a moral failure. The question deserves patient reasoning rather than pressure.

Why is there something rather than nothing? Does the universe need a cause? Does the order of nature point to intelligence? These are not only religious questions; philosophers and scientists ask them too.

Evidence Supporting the Christian Claim

Existence and causation. Things we observe depend on something else for their existence. Many philosophers argue that a chain of dependent things cannot explain itself and points to something that exists by its own nature. Modern cosmology adds that the observable universe appears to have had a beginning, which raises the question of what — or who — brought it about.

Order and fine-tuning. Fine-tuning means that several physical constants and initial conditions fall within narrow ranges that permit stable stars, chemistry and life. Physicists widely acknowledge the phenomenon; they disagree about its explanation. Design is one explanation; others are discussed below.

Consciousness and reason. We experience thought, meaning and the ability to recognize truth. Many argue it is difficult to explain how purely unguided matter would produce minds whose reasoning we can trust. This does not prove God, but it fits naturally with a universe grounded in Mind.

Morality. Most people sense that some things — torturing children for fun, for example — are really wrong, not merely disliked. If objective moral obligations exist, many philosophers argue they are best grounded in a personal, good God rather than in social convention or evolutionary usefulness alone.

Taken separately, each argument can be disputed. Together they form a cumulative case, much as a court weighs several independent lines of evidence.

Strongest Objections

Who created God? The arguments concern things that begin or depend on something else. God, as classically understood, does not begin and does not depend on anything; asking who made Him is like asking what is north of the North Pole. One may still reject that concept, but the question does not defeat it.

Science explains nature without God. Science explains how natural processes work. Whether nature itself has an ultimate explanation is a philosophical question science does not settle either way.

Why can't we see God? Why is He hidden? Christianity does not describe God as one more object inside the universe. The question of hiddenness is real and is treated in its own study.

Isn't belief in God just wishful thinking? Wishes can explain why someone holds a belief, but they cannot show the belief is false. The same objection could be turned against unbelief. The question is the evidence.

Alternative Explanations

A brute-fact universe: the universe simply exists with no further explanation. A multiverse: if countless universes exist, one with life-permitting laws is unsurprising. Unknown physics: a deeper theory may make fine-tuning inevitable. These are serious proposals held by thoughtful people; each also raises its own unanswered questions, such as what explains the multiverse or the deeper law.

What We Can Reasonably Conclude

Belief in God is not irrational. It is a reasonable explanation for several features of reality, though not a mathematical certainty. A careful person can examine the arguments and find that they point beyond the physical universe.

A general belief in a Creator still leaves us asking what God is like and whether He has spoken.

What the Bible Adds

The Bible does not open with arguments for God; it opens with God creating (Genesis 1:1). It describes creation as a witness to its Maker (Psalm 19:1–4; Romans 1:20) and says God is not far from any of us (Acts 17:27).

Scripture also claims that God has made Himself known more specifically — in a Person (John 1:1–3, 14).

What Christianity Claims

Christianity claims that the God suggested by creation and conscience has revealed Himself fully in Jesus of Nazareth: His teaching, His death and His resurrection. That claim can be examined historically.

Frequently asked questions

Can science disprove God?

Science studies the natural world through observation and testing. Whether anything exists beyond nature is not a question the scientific method can answer by itself. See the study on science and God.

Is belief in God irrational?

No. Many careful thinkers in every generation, including scientists and philosophers, have found belief in God the most reasonable explanation of reality.

Did Jesus Really Exist?

Looking to Jesus

If God exists, the most important question is whether He has come near. Christianity invites you to look at Jesus — to read His words and examine the evidence for His life, death and resurrection.
