Examining the question
Why This Is a Serious Question
Many sincere people want to believe but find God silent. If God wants a relationship, why not make Himself unmistakable? This is a fair and honest question.
Evidence Supporting the Christian Claim
Evidence is present. Scripture points to creation (Psalm 19; Romans 1:20), to God's nearness (Acts 17:27), and to Jesus' signs, written so that readers may believe (John 20:30–31).
Relationship, not mere awareness. Knowing that someone exists is not the same as knowing them. Scripture suggests God seeks people who love and trust Him, not just people who are impressed.
Faith rests on evidence. Hebrews 11:1 describes faith as assurance and conviction — trust in what God has shown and promised, like trusting a person whose character you have seen.
Strongest Objections
Why not appear in the sky? Scripture records dramatic displays — at Sinai, in Jesus' miracles — and many still did not trust God. Spectacle does not necessarily create love or change hearts.
Would clearer evidence destroy free will? Not necessarily, but overwhelming power can coerce. A God of love may limit how He reveals Himself to protect a freely given response.
Isn't hiddenness evidence God doesn't exist? It is a serious argument. It assumes we know how God would act. If His goal is freely chosen relationship, partial hiddenness is not surprising.
Alternative Explanations
Some conclude there is no God; others that God exists but is indifferent. Christianity proposes that God is personal, present and has drawn near in Jesus, though not in a way that overrides human choice.
What We Can Reasonably Conclude
God's hiddenness is real as an experience but is not total. There is enough light to seek by. Those who seek honestly are not condemned for questions.
What the Bible Adds
Jeremiah 29:13 promises that those who seek God with all their heart will find Him. Jesus told Thomas — who demanded evidence — that those who believe without seeing are blessed, yet He also gave Thomas the evidence he asked for (John 20:24–29).
What Christianity Claims
Christianity claims God is not hiding from us so much as waiting for us: He came in Jesus, the visible image of the invisible God.
Frequently asked questions
Is faith belief without evidence?
Not in the Bible's sense. Biblical faith is trust in God based on what He has revealed, much like trusting a reliable person.
