The biblical explanation

Read the whole passage

Paul's subject in 2 Corinthians 5:1–8 is bodies, not souls: the earthly tent versus the building from God. He says three times that his desire is not to be found naked — not to be an unclothed spirit — but to be clothed with the heavenly body so "that mortality might be swallowed up of life" (2 Corinthians 5:2–4). "Mortality swallowed up of life" is the very phrase he uses in 1 Corinthians 15:54 for the resurrection.

When is the believer present with the Lord?

Paul never says the unclothed state is the goal; he explicitly shrinks from it. His confident statement — "willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord" — names the two endpoints of the Christian journey without specifying the interval. His other letters fill that in: the change comes "at the last trump" (1 Corinthians 15:52), the crown is given "at that day" (2 Timothy 4:8), and the redemption of the body is still future (Romans 8:23).

Why it feels immediate

For the one who dies, there is no awareness of time passing — "the dead know not any thing" (Ecclesiastes 9:5). Death and resurrection are, in personal experience, one seamless moment: the eyes close in this life and open at the appearing of Jesus. Paul can therefore speak of being present with the Lord as the very next thing a believer knows, while chronologically it arrives at the resurrection.

What Scripture clearly says

  • Paul's desire was to be clothed with the resurrection body, not to exist unclothed (2 Corinthians 5:2–4).
  • Mortality is swallowed up of life at the last trump (1 Corinthians 15:52–54).
  • The redemption of the body is a future hope (Romans 8:23).
