The biblical explanation

Ram, goat, and little horn

Daniel 8 explicitly identifies the ram with Medo-Persia and the goat with Greece. The vision then describes a little horn and a crisis involving the sanctuary. This reading connects the horn’s development with Roman power; other Christians identify its principal fulfillment differently.

Symbolic time and Daniel 9

Daniel 9 returns to the vision with a seventy-week period. Applying the day-year principle and linking the chapters gives the argument that these weeks supply the beginning of the longer 2,300-year period. The shared starting point in 457 BC is an interpretation linking the chapters, not a year directly printed in Daniel 8:14.

Reaching 1844 without a year zero

A 2,300-year period beginning in 457 BC reaches AD 1844 when the transition from 1 BC to AD 1 is counted without a year zero. This arithmetic does not identify the event by itself; the sanctuary context must also be studied.

Sanctuary cleansing and Christ

Leviticus 16 describes sanctuary cleansing on the Day of Atonement; Hebrews presents Christ’s heavenly ministry. Comparing these passages gives the argument for understanding 1844 as a phase of that ministry, not the Second Coming or a secret return.

Historic Adventist reading: the 70 weeks are cut off from the start of the 2,300 years (Daniel 8:14; 9:24).

Alternative interpretations

  • Antiochus IV and the earthly temple

Many interpreters relate the sanctuary crisis to Antiochus IV and understand the evening-morning period in connection with the interrupted temple services.

How Seventh-day Adventists Understand This

This interpretation became a central part of Seventh-day Adventist sanctuary teaching. It connects the 2,300 years and Daniel’s seventy weeks with the 457 BC starting point and understands 1844 as a judgment phase of Christ’s heavenly ministry. Other Christians relate the sanctuary crisis principally to Antiochus IV and the earthly temple.
