The biblical explanation
Many antichrists in the apostolic era
First John 2:18–22 and 4:1–3 address opposition to Christ and false teaching already present. The term does not first appear as a name for a contemporary politician.
The historicist identification
The historicist reading compares Daniel’s little horn, Paul’s man of sin, and Revelation’s beast. It identifies a continuing apostate religious-political system, traditionally the historic papal system. The specific identification is an interpretive conclusion, not the explicit name supplied by these passages.
Systems, claims, and individual believers
The Reformation historicist tradition criticized doctrines and institutional claims. This must not be converted into condemnation of individual Catholics or other Christians. Salvation belongs to Christ, and a person’s denomination does not reveal the final judgment of their heart.
Testing alternative readings
Futurists often anticipate a final individual Antichrist; preterists connect much of the imagery with ancient imperial settings. Readers should compare these claims with the whole biblical context, avoiding headline-based identifications and conspiracy theories.
Alternative interpretations
Futurist
Often expects a final individual ruler or deceiver before Christ’s return.
Preterist
Commonly connects the relevant prophetic imagery with powers of the early Christian era.
How Seventh-day Adventists Understand This
Seventh-day Adventists continue the Reformation historicist comparison of Daniel’s little horn, Paul’s man of sin, and Revelation’s beast with the historic papal system. This identifies institutional claims, not the salvation of individual Catholics. The passages do not explicitly name that system.
