The biblical explanation

The sanctuary passages first

Hebrews 8:1–5 presents Christ’s heavenly priesthood; Daniel 8:14 speaks of sanctuary cleansing; Revelation 14:6–7 joins the everlasting gospel with an announcement of judgment. Connecting these passages with Daniel 9 supplies the argument for a judgment phase. Neither Hebrews nor Revelation explicitly names 1844.

Millerite expectation and disappointment

William Miller’s preaching focused attention on the expected return of Christ. Many Millerites eventually adopted October 22, 1844. Christ did not return on that date, and the resulting disappointment was real. This historical disappointment should not be confused with a biblical promise of that date.

Chronology versus the expected event

Some former Millerites reconsidered the meaning of the sanctuary. Instead of treating it as the earth to be cleansed at the return, they studied the heavenly sanctuary described in Hebrews. They concluded that the chronology pointed to a heavenly ministry rather than Christ’s return.

No secret return

This sanctuary interpretation does not claim that Jesus secretly returned in 1844. It interprets that date as the beginning of the final phase of His heavenly ministry. Readers should test both the chronology and the identification of the event by Scripture, rather than assuming that one proves the other.

How Seventh-day Adventists Understand This

The Seventh-day Adventist Church did not yet exist in 1844. Those who later became its pioneers came to understand the date as the beginning of the final phase of Christ’s heavenly ministry, not a secret return. This interpretation must be tested separately from the chronology and from the documented Millerite disappointment.
