Examining the question

Why This Is a Serious Question

Atheists are sometimes told they cannot be good. That is both insulting and false. It is important to separate three questions that are often confused.

Evidence Supporting the Christian Claim

Moral behavior — whether someone acts well. Atheists clearly can.

Moral knowledge — whether someone can know right from wrong. Everyone can, with or without belief in God.

Moral grounding — what makes right and wrong objectively true. This is where the discussion lies. If humans are made in God's image (Genesis 1:27) and moral obligations reflect God's good character, then human worth and moral duty have a foundation beyond opinion.

Strongest Objections

Morality comes from evolution and society. Evolution and culture can explain how moral feelings developed. Whether those feelings track objective truth — whether cruelty is really wrong, not only unhelpful — is a further question.

The Euthyphro dilemma: is something good because God commands it, or does God command it because it is good? Many theists answer that goodness is rooted in God's own nature, so it is neither arbitrary nor external to Him.

Alternative Explanations

Secular moral realists argue that moral facts exist without God. Others accept that morality is a human construction. These are serious positions held by thoughtful philosophers.

What We Can Reasonably Conclude

Atheists can be moral. Whether morality is objective without God is debated. Many find that the reality of moral obligation points toward a moral Lawgiver.

What the Bible Adds

Scripture says the law is written on human hearts (Romans 2:15) and summarizes moral duty as justice, mercy and humility (Micah 6:8), and love for God and neighbor (Matthew 22:37–40).

What Christianity Claims

Christianity claims that our sense of goodness reflects the character of God, and that everyone — religious or not — falls short and needs grace.

Frequently asked questions

Can morality exist without God?

Moral behavior and knowledge can. Whether objective moral obligation can be grounded without God is the debated philosophical question.

If Christianity Is True, Why Have Christians Done So Much Harm?

Looking to Jesus

If you care deeply about goodness, that care may itself be a pointer to the God who is good. Christianity invites you to meet that goodness in Jesus.
