Examining the question

Why This Is a Serious Question

Why am I here? Does anything I do last? These questions surface in grief, success and quiet moments alike. Any worldview must face them.

Evidence Supporting the Christian Claim

Humans seek meaning universally. We long for purpose, love and lasting significance. Christianity suggests these longings fit what we were made for.

Created on purpose. Genesis 1:26–28 describes humans made in God's image, given relationship and responsibility.

Relationship at the center. Jesus summarized life as loving God and neighbor (Matthew 22:37–40) and defined eternal life as knowing God (John 17:3).

Strongest Objections

We create our own meaning. Personal meaning matters, and Christianity affirms it. But if the universe ends in heat death, created meaning is temporary. Christianity offers meaning that is received and lasting.

Happiness is the purpose of life. Happiness is good but fragile. Scripture places joy as the fruit of knowing God, not the goal pursued for itself.

Alternative Explanations

Existentialism says life has no given meaning; we create it. Some religions see liberation from the self as the goal. Secular humanism finds meaning in human flourishing. Christianity says flourishing is real and grounded in God.

What We Can Reasonably Conclude

If God exists and Jesus rose, meaning is objective and death is not final. That changes how we see suffering, work, love and hope.

What the Bible Adds

Ecclesiastes honestly explores life's apparent futility and concludes with reverence for God (Ecclesiastes 12:13). Jesus came that people may have life abundantly (John 10:10). Revelation 21:1–5 promises a renewed earth where God dwells with His people.

What Christianity Claims

Christianity claims meaning is found in Christ: forgiveness for the past, purpose in the present, and resurrection hope for the future.

Frequently asked questions

Does death erase meaning?

Not if the Bible is true. Scripture promises resurrection and a new earth — see the study on what happens when you die.

Looking to Jesus

You were made for more than survival. Jesus offers a life that begins now and does not end. Consider Him.
