The biblical explanation
Sealed by the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 1:13 and 4:30 speak of believers sealed by the Holy Spirit. The seal must therefore be understood in relation to belonging to God and transformed life, not as a physical object or merely an external religious practice.
Sabbath as a sign of the Creator
Exodus 31 and Ezekiel 20 call Sabbath a sign between God and His people. Comparing these passages shows that the fourth commandment identifies the LORD, His creative authority, and His domain of heaven and earth. The name-authority-domain comparison is an interpretive explanation, not a separate definition of sealing supplied by Revelation.
Forehead, conviction, and character
Revelation places God’s seal or name on the forehead. This reading understands this as settled conviction and loyalty to God, contrasting with the beast’s mark. The Sabbath connection is part of that prophetic interpretation; it does not mean that external observance without faith seals a person.
Alternative interpretations
Sealing without a Sabbath identification
Many Christians emphasize the Spirit’s ownership and protection of believers without identifying the final seal particularly with Sabbath observance.
How Seventh-day Adventists Understand This
Seventh-day Adventists connect the final seal particularly with the Sabbath as the biblical sign of the Creator and with settled loyalty to God. This interpretation must be held alongside the explicit teaching that believers are sealed by the Holy Spirit; external observance without faith is not sealing.
