The biblical explanation
An image to the sea beast
Revelation 13 describes the earth beast promoting an image to the first beast and compelling worship. In this symbolic reading, the image is understood as reproducing a religious-political method of coercion rather than merely duplicating an institution’s name.
Church-state coercion
In this reading apostate religious forces seek civil power to enforce observance. Daniel 3 supplies a relevant biblical comparison of a coerced worship test. The specific modern formation must not be declared fulfilled simply from a political headline.
Worship must be voluntary
True worship is a willing response to God, not something produced by threats or economic pressure. The warning should strengthen fidelity to Christ and respect for freedom of conscience, not encourage attacks on religious groups.
Alternative interpretations
Literal image
Some futurist interpreters anticipate a literal image connected with a final ruler; others emphasize ancient imperial worship imagery.
How Seventh-day Adventists Understand This
Seventh-day Adventists understand the image as forming when apostate religious forces enlist civil power to enforce worship, reproducing the first beast’s religious-political coercion. This interpretation is not permission to declare a present-day headline a fulfilled prophecy.
