The biblical explanation
Shadow and greater reality
Exodus records the earthly sanctuary; Hebrews distinguishes that earthly pattern from Christ’s greater priestly ministry. The earthly services point beyond themselves to Him. Details of the pattern should not be pressed into speculation about heaven’s physical dimensions.
Mercy and God’s law
The mercy seat above the ark links the sanctuary with God’s covenant and law. This reading sees in the sanctuary a united picture of mercy, justice, mediation, and the removal of sin.
Once-for-all sacrifice and ongoing intercession
Hebrews presents Christ’s sacrifice as once for all and His priestly ministry as continuing. A phase of heavenly ministry is not a new sacrifice or a denial of the completed cross. Believers are invited to approach God confidently through their High Priest.
Alternative interpretations
Different understandings of phases
Christians broadly affirm Christ’s heavenly priesthood but differ over whether the earthly rooms prescribe separately dated phases of His ministry.
How Seventh-day Adventists Understand This
Seventh-day Adventists read the earthly sanctuary as illustrating Christ’s sacrifice, mediation, judgment, cleansing, and final removal of sin. They connect its services with phases of heavenly ministry while affirming the completed, once-for-all sacrifice and full access to God through Christ.
