The biblical explanation
The strongest objection: access within the veil
Hebrews 6:19–20 describes Jesus’s entry within the veil as the believer’s forerunner and High Priest. Critics understand this as immediate access to the Most Holy Place at ascension, challenging any account in which Christ lacked access to the Father until 1844. The objection should be addressed directly, not minimized.
Hebrews 9:12 and the completed sacrifice
Hebrews 9:12 emphasizes entry by Christ’s own blood and eternal redemption; Hebrews 10 emphasizes His once-for-all sacrifice. Critics argue that this language does not leave room for a delayed entry or a later completion of redemption. Any account of a later judgment phase must preserve both the completed sacrifice and Christ’s full access to God.
Access and phases are not identical
This reading distinguishes Christ’s inaugurated heavenly priesthood and access to God from a later judgment phase drawn from Daniel. This response argues that Hebrews establishes the superiority of Christ’s ministry without itself giving the complete prophetic chronology. This response is an interpretive synthesis, not a date named in Hebrews.
What remains debated
Hebrews does not mention 1844. The case for this chronology therefore depends on the interpretation of Daniel 8–9, the relationship between earthly sanctuary typology and heavenly ministry, and the meaning of judgment. Readers should compare both arguments in context. This study summarizes the dispute; it does not claim that every scholarly objection is resolved.
Alternative interpretations
Critical Christian reading
Hebrews’s ascension and within-the-veil language is understood as incompatible with a delayed Most Holy Place phase beginning in 1844.
How Seventh-day Adventists Understand This
The Seventh-day Adventist response distinguishes Christ’s full access to God at ascension from a later judgment phase inferred from Daniel. It does not claim that Hebrews names 1844 or that Christ lacked access to the Father before then. The proposed chronology and sanctuary typology remain the disputed parts of this synthesis.
