The biblical explanation

Judgment and the opened books

Daniel 7 describes a heavenly court and opened books before the saints receive the kingdom. This reading connects this scene with the judgment-hour announcement in Revelation 14 and the sanctuary cleansing in Daniel 8. That synthesis is a doctrinal interpretation of multiple passages.

God’s justice, not new information

The judgment is understood as making God’s justice and character evident before the universe, not correcting a lack of knowledge in God. First Peter 4:17 and Second Corinthians 5:10 are part of the broader biblical teaching on accountability.

Grace, faith, and the fruit of faith

Ephesians 2:8–10 makes salvation a gift of grace through faith and places good works as its fruit, not its purchase price. In this interpretation, examination of works concerns the reality of faith; it must not be portrayed as salvation earned by a flawless record.

Assurance in the Advocate

Jesus is High Priest and Advocate (Hebrews 4:14–16; 1 John 2:1). Christian assurance rests in Him. Other Christians affirm judgment but question a separate investigative phase beginning in 1844; the disagreement deserves careful biblical examination rather than fear.

Alternative interpretations

  • No distinct 1844 phase

Many Christians affirm Christ’s priesthood and final judgment but do not find a separately dated investigative judgment in Scripture.

How Seventh-day Adventists Understand This

The investigative judgment is a distinctly Seventh-day Adventist teaching connecting Daniel 7–9, Revelation 14, and the Day of Atonement with a pre-Advent examination beginning in 1844. Works are understood as evidence of faith, not the basis of salvation. Many Christians affirm judgment but reject a separately dated 1844 phase.
